Great Plains...10/9 2013

Woke up early at the motel, getting ready to leave Salina. Natalie and Mom took a quick swim so she could get rid of some energy.. Time to cross the great plains..this part of Kansas ( central▶ west) is only fields, miles and miles and miles of corn, wheat...some already harvested so yellow/brown.. as far as you can see. Sometimes you'll see a farm and some trees in the middle of a field and yes many have the typical windmill to pump up water...

A big field in Skåne is tiny compared with this.. It is interesting and pretty in a different way to see, but a whole lot of nothing. Then add no shade and 100 degrees F (around 39 C) plus a little dust.. then you get the feeling. Anyway we drove by Hays, KS, and visited Sternberg museum of Natural History. And that my dear colleagues of Bokelund that is a perfect educational museum!!  Built in a dome in 2009 with a mix of interactive learning classrooms, fossils a dig pit, walk path with extinct animals through history that moved, looked and sounded alive.. I guess a newly built museum has access to all technology needed for that. The t- rex in the "Colorado 70 mil. Years ago part" even scared me alittle... And all this in the middle of Kansas. I wish we had more time but this was a really good stop for all of us! Both girls walked around and played alot. We were alone in the whole museum! That's why september is the best month to travel in the states..

In the afternoon we visited a cattleman and his wife up in north west corner of Kansas. They had a beautiful cattlefarm and house with a nice roping arena and really good looking horses. Natalie got to ride a little and we had homemade delicious choclate ship cookies.. Earlier this summer before we decided for Montana, that family showed interest in hiring Jared so now we just stopped by and said hi. That place would be lovely to work and live at but it is located in the flat fields of Kansas and that's not where we want to be.. The night we spent at a cheap Motel 6 in Colby.

Today we drove about 400 km.. and tomorrow we will reach the mountains! Heading to Rocky Mountain National park!
I will put up more pics later when I have a computer. .
